What is an arm lift?

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a popular cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of the upper arms by reshaping and providing contour. During an arm lift, an incision is made into the upper arm through which excess skin and fat are then removed. Underlying tissues may then be repositioned to create a more toned appearance. In some cases, liposuction may be used to remove additional excess fat. Once the contouring is complete, the incision is then closed.

What are the benefits of an arm lift?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the procedure can be used to treat the following issues:

  • Tighten loose skin that hangs down from the upper arm to the elbow due to weight loss or aging.
  • Used to remove excess fat deposits and to improve the appearance of dimpled skin
  • Can help to restore elasticity
  • Improve the overall contour of the upper arm

As a result, patients who undergo an arm lift often experience an increase in self-esteem and body confidence. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your upper arms, a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons can help you determine if an arm lift is right for you.

Can I just exercise instead of getting an arm lift?

Although exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, it cannot always reduce sagging and fatty deposits in specific areas of the body. Certain factors can cause changes in our skin such as drastic weight loss and aging.

Collagen provides our skin with elasticity so it can bounce back to its original shape once we lose weight. For those that have undergone significant weight loss, an arm lift may be necessary when the skin has become stretched to a point where collagen fibers break down and can no longer return to their prior form.

How much time off will I need for my arm lift?

An arm lift is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. This means you can go rest and recuperate at one of the five-star hotels or aftercare facility we use in Tijuana, the same day of your surgery and won't be required to stay overnight in the hospital. Full recuperation from an arm lift can take one to two weeks. During this time, it is normal to have some pain and soreness after the procedure, easily managed with prescription pain medication during the early stages. Your doctor may have drains in place to help remove excess fluid from the surgical site. You may also be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks to speed healing. Most people can return to work or other normal activities within several days  of their arm lift.
